Nell Jones

Nell Jones, of Oglethorpe, Ga. passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, April 19, 2025, at The Oaks Nursing Home in Marshallville, Ga. after an extended illness.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 25, 2025, at 2 p.m. at Watson-Mathews Funeral Home in Montezuma, Ga. Visitation will be held an hour prior to the service. Pastor Roy Peterson will officiate the service. Burial will follow at Bertha Dozier Memorial Park Cemetery.

Nell was born to the late James Daniel Dunmon and Bertha Hardage Dunmon. She was preceded in death by her beloved and devoted husband of 65 years, Rufus C. Jones, and her brothers, James Dunmon and Claude Dunmon. She was also predeceased by a very special, lifelong friend, Cynthia Groce Still. Their bond was extraordinarily close, and they were truly sisters by heart. They made many beautiful memories together, starting in second grade, and lasted  throughout their lives.

A devoted and faithful member of Stillwater Chapel in Ideal, Ga., Nell lived her life as a reflection of her deep-rooted faith and unwavering love for her family and community. Her kindness, grace, and quiet strength touched the lives of all who knew her. Nell dedicated many years of service to the public. She worked at City Hall in Montezuma, Ga., from 1969 until 1992. Following her time there, she served as a rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service in Oglethorpe, Ga., before retiring in 1999. Her dedication, reliability, and warm spirit left a lasting impression on colleagues and community members alike.

She is survived by her two loving daughters, Angela J. Denham (Steve) of Brierfield, Alabama, and Evelyn J. Sellars of Montezuma, Georgia; three grandchildren, Jonathan Duke (Monica), Michael Duke (Sidney), and Stephanie Denham (Andrew Babb); eleven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immeasurable joy to her life.

Nell`s legacy is one of love, faith, and service. She will be dearly missed and forever remembered by her family, friends, and the many lives she touched throughout her journey. Her family would like to give thanks to the family and friends who stayed by her side throughout her life, especially in the last few years.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the entire staff and administration of The Oaks Nursing Home for the excellent care she received while a resident there. Also, much heartfelt gratitude is extended to her roommate, Linda, and her three children, for the love and compassion they so kindly showed her.

Her daughters also want to thank her special and loving friend, Deborah Raburn Stubbs, for all of her visits when their mother was at home, and when she became a resident in the nursing home.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Watson-Mathews Funeral Home in Montezuma, Ga.
