MONTGOMERY, AL - Dr. Jesse David Derrick passed away on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at his residence in Montgomery, Alabama. Visitation will be at Watson-Mathews Funeral Home, 322 N. Dooly Street, Montezuma, GA from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, April 10, 2015. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 11 at Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens.
Dr. Derrick was born on September 10, 1921 in Oglethorpe, Georgia, son of Dr. Howard Clifton Derrick and Elvie Jennings Derrick.He was a lifelong resident of Macon County, Georgia, where he practiced veterinary medicine for over fifty years. He served on the board and on committees of the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association during his career, and in 1968 he was elected president of this organization.In1982 he was honored as Georgia's Veterinarian of the Year. Dr. Derrick served as Vice President of American Veterinary Medical Association in 1987 and 1988, and was a Georgia delegate to the national association for many years. Dr. Derrick was active in the community as a long-time member of Kiwanis Club, Macon County Farm Bureau, and Macon County Hospital Board and Board of Health.He was also chairman and member of the Montezuma Housing Authority and director of Bank of Macon County.Dr. Derrick was a strong booster of high school sports and served as president of Macon County High School Boosters Club. He was also an avid fan of Auburn University, having graduated there from Veterinary School in 1945.
Dr. Derrick was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years in marriage, Carolyn Dixon Derrick.He is survived by three children: Gloria Derrick Rawlings (Phillip) of Montgomery, Alabama; Dale Derrick Rudolph (William) of Denver, Colorado; Jesse David Derrick, Jr. (Pam) of Hamilton, Georgia, 4 grandchildren: Phillip Rawlings, Jr., David Rudolph (Kristine), Carrye R. Cost (Nick), Jennifer D. Hand (Glenn) and 7 great grandchildren: Derrick Hand, J.P. Hand, William Rudolph, Margaret Rudolph, Avery Rudolph, Charlie Cost, and Paul Cost.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Auburn University Foundation for the Veterinary School, 317 South College Street, Auburn, AL 36849.
