MONTEZUMA, GA - Mr. William L. Brown, 74, of Montezuma, GA, passed away Thursday, September 18, 2014. Visitation is scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m., Saturday, September 20, 2014, at Watson-Mathews Funeral Home in Montezuma, GA. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, September 21, 2014 at Montezuma United Methodist Church in Montezuma, GA, with Rev. Ken Myers, Rev. Billy Kimbrel, and Dr. Tony Caldwell officiating the service. Burial services will be private at Felton Cemetery in Montezuma, GA.

Mr. Brown was born May 27, 1940, in Montezuma, GA, to the late Watt Paul Brown and Susie Greer Brown. In addition to his parents, Mr. Brown was preceded in death by a brother, John Marvin Brown, and a sister, Catherine Sue Coogle.

Mr. Brown began farming in 1965 and was the owner of William Brown Farms in Montezuma, GA, and part owner of Fresh Plants-Green Beans in Americus, GA, in which he held other positions. He was a University of Georgia graduate, with a Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture. He was elected to the Flint Energies Board of Directors in 1986, representing Area III, Post 1- Macon, Dooly, and Sumter Counties. He served as Flint Energies Chairman of the Board beginning in October 2008 until present, served as Ex Officio on Finance & Audit, Facilities, Compensation, Bylaws Revision, and Pension Review Committees; and previously served as Assistant Secretary-Treasurer, Secretary-Treasurer, and Vice Chairman. Mr. Brown served on the Wachovia Bank Advisory Board, Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service Board, Ag Georgia Farm Credit Board of Directors, South Central Farm Credit Board, and was a member representative of Oglethorpe Power Corporation. He was a member of Georgia Farm Bureau, and a former member of the Georgia AgriBusiness Council and Macon County Farm Service Agency. He was appointed by Governor Zell Miller to the Governor's Science and Technology Board, and appointed by Governor Sonny Perdue to the Rural Development Council. Mr. Brown was a lifelong dedicated member of the Montezuma United Methodist Church, where he served on and chaired several committees and was a member of the Spares and Pairs Sunday School Class.

Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, Debra Cross Brown, of Montezuma, GA; five children: William Howard (Loren) Brown of Montezuma, GA, Kathryn Elizabeth Brown of Atlanta, GA, Kimberly Michele Brown of Montezuma, GA, Mary Margaret Brown (Joey) Turner of Marietta, GA, and Rachel Suzanne Brown (Glenn) Glass of Daphne, AL; and a brother, Watt Paul (Benita) Brown of Montezuma, GA; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Glenn and Deloris Cross of Montezuma, GA.Also surviving are eleven grandchildren: William DeWitt Brown, Kaitlin Elizabeth Brown, Sarah Elizabeth Hardin, Julia Caroline Hardin, William Higdon Hardin, Mary Rachel Hardin, Joseph Mason Turner, William Peyton Turner, Isabelle Grace Glass, Gabrielle Rose Glass, and Houston Randolph Glass, and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends.
