Walter Joe Trussell

November 14, 1930 — August 13, 2021

Walter "Joe" Trussell, Sr. 90, went peacefully to his Heavenly Father on August 13, 2021, surrounded by his family at the Oaks Personal Care and Nursing Center.

Visitation will be from 4:00PM to 6:00PM, Sunday August 15th at Watson-Mathews Funeral Home in Montezuma, Ga.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, August 16th at Bertha Dozier Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Michael Truitt officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by Ft. Benning Honor Guard.

Joe was born on November 14, 1930, in Taylor County to the Late Walter Moody and Julia Nelson Trussell. He spent most of his life in Garden Valley. He graduated in 1947 from Oglethorpe High School where he was a member of the basketball team. He married Gloria Rhunell Hill in 1951 and their loved produced three loving and faithful children, Debbie, Buddy, and David.

Joe was an avid farmer, hunter, fisherman, and golfer. He was best known for his cooking skills and his dance moves. Joe served his Country with the National Guard for 19 ½ years and 8 years in the Army Reserves where he retired as a Captain. He loved his community and was a member of The Lions Club, Shriners, Masons, Historical Society, Rescue Unit, Volunteer Firefighter, Auxiliary Police, and the MCHS Chain Crew.

He was the owner of Trussell Electric from 1956 to 1984. He was co-owner of Trussell Services with his son, Buddy, from 1984 to 1997. Joe was the Scout Master for 11 years in Montezuma and he had 11 Eagle Scouts during his time as Scout Master, two of which were his sons. He had the honor of earning his Wood Badge and Silver Beaver while he led his troop.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Wife of 67 years, Rhunnell , Daughter (Debbie Trussell Key), Brothers, (Jackie, and Bobby) andSister (Peggy Trussell Freeman).

Joe is survived by two sons, Walter Joe "Buddy" Trussell, Jr. (Angie) Cordele, Ga., James David Trussell (Bethany) Montezuma, Ga. Brother Billy Trussell (Alabama) Grandchildren Walter Joe "Brock" Trussell, III Asheville, N.C., Mindi T. Sims (Corey) Byron, Ga., Anna Trussell, Montezuma, Ga, JoAnn Howell(Chris) Ft. Hood, Alyce Cox(Tyler) Warner Robins, GA. Great Grandchildren Lily Grace Sims, Chase Howell, Haylee Howell and his faithful dog, Patches and two caregivers, Pam Cosby and Kelish Brown.
