OGLETHORPE, GA - Mrs. Shirley S. Martin, 82, of Oglethorpe, Georgia passed away Friday, November 23, 2018 after a recent acute illness and hospitalization.Mrs. Martin, a retired Macon County educator and known by generations of students simply as "Miss Shirley", was born at the Macon County Health Clinic in Montezuma, Georgia in 1935, the only daughter of Sally DeLoach Stafford and Gene Arthur Stafford.With the exception of her college experience at the Georgia State College for Women (GSCW), now known as Georgia College, and a few years in Columbus (GA) Public School System as a high school physical educator, she was a life-long resident of Oglethorpe.
Mrs. Martin, a 1953 graduate of Oglethorpe High School, attended GSCW and Georgia Southwestern College, where she completed her Masters and Sixth-Year Degrees.A 30-year educator, she retired from the Macon County Public School System in 1993. She was an active member of Oglethorpe Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher for 57 years. Upon retirement from teaching, she worked at the Oglethorpe library as a volunteer and was known as an avid reader of all genres.
Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 48 years, Rodger Blaine Martin of Point Pleasant, New Jersey, and her three siblings: Thomas Frederick Stafford, Gary Dix Stafford, and Morris Eugene "Buck" Stafford.She is survived by her son, COL. (ret) Rodger Keith Martin, her daughter-in-law, Mary Gene Klein Martin, her beloved grandson, Matthew Keith Martin, and many cousins and friends.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 27th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Watson-Mathews Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 28th at 2:00 p.m. at Oglethorpe Baptist Church. Rev. Richard Taylor and Rev. Chet Ragsdale will officiate.
Burial will follow at Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens.
