MONTEZUMA, GA - Robert G Fear, age 74, of Montezuma, GA, passed away on November 30, 2016. He was born on November 20, 1942 in Flint, Michigan to Arthur J and Myra Virginia Dewire Fear.
Visitation will be at Watson- Mathews Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, December 2, 2016.Mr. Fear will be open to the public for viewing from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM on Friday, December 2, 2016. At the request of the family, the casket will be closed during the visitation.
The funeral will be at the Montezuma United Methodist Church on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. with burial afterward at the Bertha Dozier Memorial Park with military honors.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Allen Fear; four children: James (Charlene) Lewis, Anne (Peter) Way, Sara (Patrick) Rabe, Robbie (Richard) Marshall; and four grandchildren: Lara Way, Joe Way, Jackson Marshall, and Caroline Marshall. He was preceded in death by his sister Ann Fear Neely and his parents. He was blessed with a loving extended family.
After attending various grade schools in Michigan, California, and Washington State, the family moved to Athens, Georgia, where Robert attended high school at Athens High School, graduating in 1959. After a year break, he entered the University of Georgia graduating in 1964 with a major in Spanish Literature.
He immediately joined the Army in September 1964. He was a transportation officer and also a logistician and contract officer. He retired after 28 years as a Colonel. During his Army career he served two tours in Vietnam, two tours in Europe and an extended (6 month) and a short (5 week) temporary duty in Somalia. In 1968 he commanded the 199th Transportation Company, Medium Truck. The unit ran line-haul convoys throughout central Vietnam. This was his all time favorite job. For both of his Vietnam tours, he was most proud of the fact that all of his 50 to 200 troops walked to their own bunks at night. His soldiers, your sons, grandsons, husbands, and brothers, were safe under his command.
During his Army career he attended the Army Transportation School, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the Army War College and got his masters' degree in industrial psychology from Central Michigan University.
In 1992 he retired and moved to Montezuma, Georgia and got involved in various volunteer activities. After the flood of 1994 he served as Deputy Director of the Macon County Flood Recovery Commission. He was on the committee that planned the Macon County Transit System. He served as the treasurer, publisher of the newsletter and president of the Macon County Historical Society. While president he coordinated fund raising and oversaw the renovation of the Montezuma Depot. He was treasurer of the old Women's Club Housewhere he managed the scheduling of events and the rent. He was treasurer of the Kiwanis Club, a member of the Citizens' Review Panel for the Juvenile Court Judge, and on the Board of Trustees of the Montezuma United Methodist Church. He was also the poll officer for district 4 in Montezuma for many years and an active fund raiser for the Macon County Relay for Life.
