Nanita Guerry Schofield Gottman, died peacefully at age 99 on December 22, 2017.
A graveside memorial service will be held on Friday, February, 23, 2018 at 11:30 am at Bertha Dozier Memorial Park in Montezuma, Ga.
She was born in Montezuma, GA on Sept. 29, 1918 to Judge John B. Guerry and Ophelia Smith Guerry. Nanita lived most of her life in Montezuma.
She graduated from Shorter College in 1938 with an AB degree (math major) and from Emory University in 1939 with a M.A. degree (sociology). She worked for the National Youth Administration (NYA) in Douglas, GA, as a supervisor for 9 counties in south Georgia. In 1943 she joined the WAVES (Navy) as an ensign and was assigned to BUPERS in Washington, D.C.From 1951 to 1973 she was Manager of the Montezuma Chamber of Commerce.
Nanita was very active in the Montezuma First Baptist Church.She taught the Men's Bible Class for many years, led the Junior Choir 1956-1974, served as a substitute teacher for the Edna Reid S.S. class, served as Sunday School Superintendent 1982-1988, sang in the Senior Choir, and served for many years as a member of the Finance Committee and as a Church Trustee.
Nanita was a past-president and an active member for over 50 years of the Montezuma Music Lover's Club, Treasurer of the United Givers Campaign in Macon County 1991-93, the Inter-Club Council Chairman for 10 years, Macon County Historical Society Treasurer 1981-85, President 1993-94.She became the unofficial historian of Macon County and Montezuma during her later years and wrote many history articles for the local newspaper. In 2010 she received the Bud McKenzie Community Service Award in recognition of her outstanding community service to Macon County. She loved to play party bridge and duplicate bridge. She also loved to travel and had visited six continents. She always had a large world map on her wall with her various trips marked on it.
Nanita had a very positive impact upon her community as evidenced by the above activities.She has had an even greater influence upon her family members, providing advice, guidance, counsel, and most of all love.
She is predeceased by her husbands, Harry J. Schofield and Dewitt C. Gottman; son Harry J. Schofield Jr.; siblings Vaidee Thompson, Clara Martin Denny, John B. Guerry Jr.; step-son Kenneth D. Gottman; and grandson Mark Gottman.
She is survived by her daughter Martha Jane Schofield Mason (Charles), stepson Lloyd E. Gottman (Heidrun), nephews F. Bauries Thompson (Laurie) and John Guerry Thompson (Elaine), 5 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
