OGLETHORPE, GA - Mrs. Mary Rosalind Wurst Brinson died on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at the Crisp County Regional Hospital in Cordele, Georgia.Mrs. Brinson was a longtime resident of Oglethorpe, Georgia in Macon, County.
Visitation will be Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Watson-Mathews Funeral Home in Montezuma, Georgia from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the Oglethorpe United Methodist Church in Oglethorpe, Georgia on September 10, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be at Westview Cemetery in Wrightsville, Georgia.
Mrs. Brinson was born in Thomas County, Georgia on August 12, 1925.She graduated from Meigs High School in Meigs, Georgia in 1942; attended the Alabama Polytechnic Institute in Auburn, Alabama for one year and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1946 with a B.S. in Home Economics.
Following graduation, Mrs. Brinson taught for the Clarke County School System in Athens, Georgia for one year.She also taught for one year each for Gilchrist County School System in Trenton, Florida and the Lafayette County School System in Mayo, Florida prior to moving to Oglethorpe, Georgia in 1951.Mrs. Brinson taught Home Economics at Oglethorpe High School for the Macon County School System from 1953 through 1956.She taught Early Elementary Education at Macon County Elementary School in Montezuma, Georgia from 1981 through 1992 and in 1996.Mrs. Brinson also taught briefly at the South Georgia Technical and Vocational School in Americus, Georgia in 1980.Mrs. Brinson was a member of the Professional Association of Georgia Educators.
In addition to teaching, Mrs. Brinson was widely known as the proprietor of Brinson's Department Store in Oglethorpe, Georgia.Mrs. Brinson was also actively involved in the operations and management of her farm in Macon County.
Mrs. Brinson was a longtime member of the Athens Baptist Church in Athens, Georgia.In addition, during her 66 years of residence in Oglethorpe, Georgia, she enjoyed the fellowship of the women of both the Lutheran and Methodist churches in Oglethorpe.
Mrs. Brinson is the daughter of the late Charles Carl Wurst and Idella Carter Wurst and the granddaughter of the late John G. and Rosa Rupp Wurst and the late Thomas W. and Mary Allen Carter.
Mrs. Brinson was preceded in death by her husband, the late Jeremiah Edison Brinson; her son, Curtis Edison Brinson, her daughter, Bonnie Leah Brinson M.D.; her brothers, Charles G. Wurst, Andrew Wurst and Fred T. Wurst and a grandson, James Edison Kring.
Mrs. Brinson is survived by sisters-in-law, Esther Smith Wurst, Elizabeth Strickland Wurst, Gloria McLendon Wurst and Billie Turner Brinson as well as her brother, James Edward Wurst.She is also survived by daughters, Sara Lovett Brinson Penn (Edward) of Greenville, S.C., Mary Idell Brinson Kring (Gary) of Talbotton, Georgia and Edith Gwen Brinson Murphy (Keith) of Dunwoody, Georgia, and a son, Robert Earl Brinson, M.D. of Charleston, S.C.She is survived as well by grandson, Jeremiah J. Kring (Shannon) of Hamilton, Georgia and two granddaughters, Meghan Leah Brinson Ghiotto (Tony) of Raleigh, N.C. and Sara Amanda Brinson of Georgetown, S.C.She is also survived by great-grand-daughters, Raven and Amanda Kring and great-grandsons, Jefferson and Theodore Ghiotto.
