ANDERSONVILLE, GA - Martha A. Smith, age 86, of Andersonville, Georgia passed away peacefully at home, on Wednesday, December 12, 2012.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde P. Smith, Sr. and two sons, John Hewett Smith and Jere David Smith. She is survived by her son, Clyde P. Smith, Jr. of Andersonville, and three daughters, Julia (Randy) Speir of Roswell; Joan (Rick) Converse of Americus, and Edna (Tom) Reams of Rincon; ten grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Also surviving her are two sisters Loucretia Vanzant of Albany and Beverly (Ellis) Rhoden of Comer, Ga.
Mrs. Smith was born July 31, 1926 in Early County, Georgia to the late Mr. and Mrs. D.C. Anglin. She graduated from Berry College in 1951 with a B.S. degree in Home Economics and came to Macon County as a Home Demonstration Agent (now known as a County Extension Agent.) Shortly after coming to Macon County, she met Clyde Smith, a dairyman in the Cut-Off Community, and married him in 1952. She was a loving and devoted mother to her children and their many activities. She served some years as a Den Mother for Boy Scouts and as a Girl Scout Leader. After the last child started grade school, she went back to school herself and received her teaching certificate. She retired after 20 years of teaching in the Schley County School System. She enjoyed gardening, canning, and preserving food for her family each summer, and being a farmer's wife.
Visitation will be held Sunday, December 16, 2012 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Watson-Mathews Funeral Home in Montezuma. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Monday, December 17, 2012 at Mt. Zion- St. Luke Lutheran Church, Randolph St., in Oglethorpe, with Pastor Harry Tedrow officiating. Burial will follow in Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be given to Mt. Zion-St. Luke Lutheran Church, Randolph St., Oglethorpe, GA 31068.
