Mr. Wood was born August 11, 1926 in Ideal, GA, to the late Joel Henry Wood, Sr. and Mary Lou Kelley Wood. He was a member of Whitewater Baptist Church. Mr. Wood attained the rank of Corporal in the United States Army and served during World War II. His favorite memories include picking apples off the trees as he rode the trains through France toward Germany and hearing Churchill say "the war is over." He worked for Georgia Power for many years and helped keep the power on during the snow storm of 1969. He always had something to give, if only a piece of candy and a good word and he never met a stranger. His last words were explaining his favorite food group was cake- chocolate cake, coconut cake, burnt caramel cake, and pound cake. Mr. Wood loved farming, fishing, and bird hunting.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Wood was preceded in death by two brothers: James Everett Wood and Joel Henry Wood, Jr.; and a sister, Clarice Newsome.
Mr. Wood is survived by his children: Malcolm L. (Janalee) Wood, Jr. of Powder Springs, GA, Kelly A. (Marta) Wood of Ideal, GA, and Melanie Wood (Bruce) Call of South Weber City, UT; two brothers: Roy (Shirley) Wood of Milner, GA, and Ralph Wood of Milledgeville, GA; a sister, Lotice Bryant of Moultrie, GA; seventeen grandchildren; and twenty-nine great-grandchildren.
A special thanks to his cake bakers for the joy and pleasure they gave him; cake was love to him.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Whitewater Baptist Church, 1955 State Route 128, Oglethorpe, GA 31068.
