MONTEZUMA, GA - Jean Dickey Roberts of Montezuma died Aug. 28, 2012, at Flint River Hospital following a brief illness. She was 82.
Born in 1930 in Fannin County, she was the daughter of the late Leila Leatherwood Dickey and Ralph Chastain Dickey. She was a graduate of Berry High School and attended Berry College. She later was graduated from Georgia Southwestern College, received her master's degree from the University of Georgia and did further post-graduate work at Valdosta State University. She taught elementary school in Macon County and later taught special education in the Houston County School System for more than 20 years. She was known as an educator who cared as much for her students' well-being as for their lessons in the classroom.
Jean married William J. Roberts of Montezuma in 1950 at Barnwell Chapel on the campus of Berry College " on the same day that her groom graduated from college. The couple eventually settled in Montezuma where they raised a family of two sons and three daughters. Jean loved her children and grandchildren beyond all else.
Jean was an avid gardener and talented homemaker. Family and friends looked forward to receiving gifts of jelly and other canned produce at Christmas. She was equally interested in her family's Dickey and Chastain heritage, and she spearheaded restoration of two historic family cemeteries in North Georgia. Jean was also very involved in the Methodist Church. She served as president of the United Methodist Women and taught Sunday School at Montezuma United Methodist where she was a member for many years.
She is survived by her husband, William J. Roberts of Montezuma. The couple recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. She is also survived by her sons: William Harvey and Deborah Roberts of Perry Fla.; and Benjamin Dickey and Dianne Roberts of Montezuma; and daughters, Rebecca and Steve Bristow of Columbus; Kathryn and Mike Norris of Fruit Cove, Fla.; and Alice and Bill Queen of Covington. She is also survived by grandchildren Stacey Roberts Ayala (Louie); Stephanie Roberts Hawk (David); John Norris (Megan); Jackson Norris; Alan Bristow; David Bristow; Taylor Queen; and Wright Queen. Other survivors include several nephews, nieces and great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Aug. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Watson Mathews Funeral Home in Montezuma. Funeral services are scheduled at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, at Montezuma United Methodist Church, 201 North Dooly St., Montezuma, Ga. Burial will follow at Bertha Dozier Cemetery in Montezuma.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Montezuma United Methodist Church.
