James L. Souter, Jr., age 78, of Montezuma, GA passed away Sunday, December 21, 2008. A private burial was held at Felton Cemetery. A Memorial Service was held at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008 at the First Baptist Church in Montezuma. Family greeted friends after the memorial service in the church sanctuary. Dr. Randy Gregg officiated.
He was born on March 3, 1930 in Warm Springs, GA. to the late James Lester Souter, Sr. and Tommie Grace Hill Souter. He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Tom Souter Greene. He was a self-employed Lumber and Timber owner. He was a Deacon of First Baptist Church of Montezuma, he was a graduate of Montezuma High School, the Baylor School for Boys, and also the University of Georgia where he was a member of SAE Fraternity. He served 4 years in the U.S. Air Force as a pilot in SAC during the Korean War. Following his service he joined his father in Souter Pulpwood and Lumber Company where he later became the owner until he retired in 1997. He taught a Sunday School Class for 12 year olds for many years. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club, the Masons, and a Shriner. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and enjoyed spending time outdoors with his sons.
Survivors include his wife, Betty A. Souter of Montezuma, GA; three sons, J. Lester Souter, III (Mary), William Hood Souter, and Thomas Hill Souter, Sr.(Laura Lea), all of Montezuma, GA; 7 grandchildren, James Souter, Howell Souter, Bennett Souter, Hood Souter, Thomas Souter, Lee Souter, and Sarah Grace Souter.
