MONTEZUMA, GA - James Daniel "Jimmy" Maffett Jr., age 90, of Montezuma, GA, passed away Thursday, February 23, 2017 at The Oaks Nursing and Personal Care Home in Marshallville, GA.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2017, at 2:00 pm at the Montezuma United Methodist Church with Dr. Tony Caldwell officiating.Visitation will follow after the service in the fellowship hall of the church.A private burial will be held at Felton Cemetery in Montezuma.
Born on February 12, 1927 in Macon, Georgia to James Daniel Maffett, Sr. and Ruth HaugabookMaffett, he graduated from Montezuma High School in 1944 and entered the University of Georgia two weeks later. During his freshman year, he was drafted into the United States Army towards the end of World War II. Upon his discharge, he returned to Athens, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1950. Following graduation, he was employed by the Macon County Board of Education as a multi-sport coach, teacher, Athletic Director, and Director of Maintenance and Transportation until his retirement in 1989. He is most well-known for starting the football program at Macon County High School in 1962 and developing a winning tradition over his 23 years as head coach, garnering awards including Class B Middle Georgia Coach of the Year in 1977. Because of his 39 years working with the young men and women in the Macon County School System, he is lovingly known by most everyone as "Coach". As an active member of the Montezuma United Methodist Church, he taught Jr. High Sunday School and served on many boards and committees over the years.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Sara Anne Williams Maffett of Montezuma, Georgia; two daughters: Anne Maffett Rickert (Rob) of Valdosta, Georgia., and Laura Lynn Maffett Bell (Mark) of Huntsville, Alabama; one brother, Jack Haugabook Maffett of Montezuma, Georgia; three grandchildren: Callie Rickert, Sadie Rickert, and Maggie Bell along with several nieces and nephews.He is preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Marilyn Maffett.
