James (Jimmy) Ernest Medlin, age 85, passed away December 9, 2022 at the Houston Medical Center, Warner Robins, GA after a short illness. Mr. Medlin was born April 13, 1937 to Ernest P. and Louise Wolfe Medlin in Cordele, GA.
Jimmy graduated from Cordele High School and Georgia Southwestern College (Magna Cum Laude) in History and Political Science. He served in the United States Army stationed in Germany. Baseball was a big part of his early life, playing in high school and being selected to play in the State North/South All-Star game in 1955. He also played baseball during his service in the Army.
Jimmy was a previous member of Cedar Valley Baptist Church and First Baptist Church, Montezuma where he taught Sunday School and was a Deacon at both churches. He was a former member of Whitewater Baptist Church, Oglethorpe and a current member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Bolingbroke. Jimmy began his working career at the Citizen & Georgian and Commercial Printers, Montezuma in 1960 as a printer. For 25 years, Jimmy was co-owner, editor and photographer of the newspaper and retired after 40 years.
Mr. Medlin is survived by his three children Mike Medlin (Robin), Cordele; Cassie Hamlin (Dodd), Macon; and Paige Layfield (Lee), Unadilla. Three grandchildren Rachael Martinez (Oscar), Roswell; Andie Greene (Brandon), Acworth; and Perry Hamlin, Athens. One great-granddaughter Lorelai Greene, Acworth. Two brothers Larry Medlin (Doreen), Albany, and Johnny Medlin (Dee), Charleston SC and one sister Barbara Strickland, Ashburn. Preceding him in death are his parents Ernest and Louise Medlin; brothers Harold, David and Joel Medlin and sister Carolyn Cox.
Watson-Matthews Funeral Home, Montezuma has charge of arrangements which will include a private family gathering.
