OGLETHORPE, GA - Hilda Grant English, born June 13, 1920, passed away after a brief illness on the 12th of December at the age of 97.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, the 15th day of December at 2pm Red Hill Primitive Baptist Church in Oglethorpe, GA with graveside services to follow at Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Flowers are welcome and/or donations to Red Hill Primitive Baptist Church in honor of Hilda English.
Born in Andersonville, Ga, Hilda was the oldest of four children (Algin Joe Grant, Doris Jane Grant, and is survived by Betty Jean Wicker) to Leonard Parker and Ola Mae Grant.Hilda was joyously married to her soul mate, Emory (who preceded her in death) for over 50 years.Together, they raised their only child, Connie, and shared the bounty of Emory's famous Garden with family and friends for decades. Hilda retired from the Macon County School System where she served 28 years as the Head Dietician.
Hilda was a beloved member of Red Hill Primitive Baptist Church and served as a leading member of the Oglethorpe Garden Club, was a lifelong member of the UDC and enjoyed the Living Loving Lutherans club. She was an avid gardener who loved growing flowers to enhance the beauty of her home and compliment Emory's Garden.Hilda remained active to the end of her life and never met a stranger.She will be remembered as being a most loving soul who genuinely cared for everyone she knew.
Hilda is survived by her daughter, Connie Smith; her three grandchildren, Major Layne Smith (USMC retired), Lauren Hobby (Mike), and Jason Smith (Kristen); and seven great-grandchildren (Alayna Brooke Hornbaker (Larry); Payton Smith; Jake Hobby; Hadley Smith; Madison Hobby; Emma Smith; and Beau Smith.); two great-great grandchildren (Ethan & Madi Hornbaker), and numerous nieces and nephews.
