SAINT SIMONS ISLAND, GA - Mrs. Gwendolyn Ann Peterman Neylans, age 87, of Montezuma and Saint Simons Island, GA passed away on Monday, October 10, 2016, at Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick, GA.
A graveside service will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery in Americus, GA., on October 21, 2016 at 11:00 am.
Mrs. Neylans was born in 1928 in Sumter County, GA to the late George Clarence Peterman and Vesta Holman Peterman. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Oscar Shelby Neylans, Jr. and two brothers, Thomas Leonard Peterman and George Clarence Peterman, Jr. She was a graduate of Union High School in Leslie, GA., and a graduate of the Macon Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1949, Macon, GA. She worked at various locations throughout her nursing career including nurse house manager at St. Marys Hospital in Athens while her husband completed his M.S. in Zoology. She and Oscar continued their careers in Atlanta, Chicagoland, and South Georgia. Their work complimented each other as he was in public health, food safety and technology, product development research and water testing/pollution control. She was a pioneer in modern geriatric nursing in Georgia. While Director of Nurses at Montezuma Nursing Home she was appointed by the Georgia Department of Medical Assistance to be the industry representative on the team which developed the DMA-6 protocol and was the beta site for its implementation.She retired from Magnolia Manor (Americus) in 1993 after serving 21 years as a Geriatrics Nurse Manager. Throughout her nursing career she mentored and imparted knowledge and wisdom to those around her. She showed tender care and professional compassion for those who were ill. She loved her chosen vocation.
She is survived by two daughters; Nancy Neylans of Saint Simons Island, GA., and Susan Johnson and husband Tony of Lafayette, LA., six grandchildren; Carlson Potts of Valley Center, CA, CarolineShem-Tov and husband Omer of Atlanta, GA., Nathan Potts of Saint Simons Island, GA., Jason Johnson of Bossier City, LA., Jeremy Johnson and wife Daniela of Baton Rouge, LA., and Jennifer Johnson of Lafayette, LA. She also leaves behind two cherished great grandchildren; Elisheva and Jonathan Shem-Tov of Atlanta, GA., and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at the Hospice of the Golden Isles for their dedication and professionalism, and for their untiring efforts to care for the patients at the facility during Hurricane Matthew. A heart felt thank-you also goes out to the Team on "5 St. Simons" and the Emergency Care Center at Southeast Georgia Health Systems, and the many doctors and health professionals who encouraged Mrs. Neylans' daily determination to live. And lastly a very special thank you to Cora and Linda, two ladies that gave her tender care, encouragement, and love. For their friendship, we are forever grateful.
Family and friends will gather for lunch at the pond house following the graveside service.
