MONTEZUMA, GA – Grover Marion “Mickey” Barfield, age 67, of Montezuma, GA passed away at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, GA with his loving family by his side on Sunday, January 14, 2024.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 18, 2024 at 2:00 PM in the Montezuma First Baptist Church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services. Interment will follow in Bertha Dozier Memorial Park Cemetery in Montezuma, GA. Tony West and Frank Strickand will officiate the service.
Mickey was born on February 22, 1956 in Montezuma, GA to the late Grover Barfield and Gladys Barfield. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Myra Jo Tharpe and Vicki Ager.
Mickey dedicated 43 years of unwavering service to law enforcement, beginning in 1977. His commitment shone through roles at the Montezuma Police Department, Macon County Sheriff’s Department, and Fort Valley Police Department, where he held the position of Captain over Investigations and Assistant Chief. Notably, he served as Chief of Police of Ideal, GA., and retired as a Chief of Police from the Rochelle Police Department.
In addition to his law enforcement roles, Mickey served as the coroner of Macon County for 12 years, earning recognition as Coroner of the Year. A respected member of of the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police, Mickey’s contributions were invaluable. Beyond his professional life, he found joy in fishing, hunting, and creating cherished memories with his beloved family.
Mickey was married to his devoted wife, Linda Mims Barfield, for 35 years. He had three children he adored, Michael Scott “Scotty” Layfield (wife Kelly), Shelley Layfield Simmons (husband Travis) and Steven Mims Layfield. Fondly known as “Pop” to his adored grandchildren who were the center of his world: Tanner Brady, Lane Brady, Ryann Brady, Jaxton Simmons, Hunter Layfield and Hailyn Layfield. He was survived by his sisters, Brenda Etheridge (husband Wayne), and Carolyn Poole (husband Phonzie).
