George Hammock

OGLETHORPE, GA - George Hammock, age 86, of Oglethorpe, GA passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 25 at 2 PM at Mt. Zion-St. Luke Lutheran Church in Oglethorpe, GA with Pastor Harry E. Tedrow and Pastor John Sims officiating. Burial will follow in Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at "The Taylor House", 304 Baker Street in Oglethorpe on Thursday, March 24 from 5 - 7 PM. Friends may come by the funeral home on Thursday to sign the guest register and to view Mr. Hammock until 7 PM.

Mr. George was born on March 5, 1925 in Oglethorpe, GA to the late John Wycliff Hammock and Minnie Lou Williams Hammock. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1954 after serving in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II.He was a devoted member, including serving on the church council of Mt. Zion-St. Luke Lutheran Church, and received awards for his outstanding loyalty and devotion to the Oglethorpe Lions Club.His occupations included surveying land, cattle farming and working with the postal service.

Working with the community and being a wonderful servant to others through membership in the Lions Club and the Lutheran Church, Mr. George was beloved and respected by all.In addition to his work and community service, his kindness and gentle manner is how he was best known by those who knew him. Leading by example, he was a mentor and friend to many.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Hammock of Oglethorpe, GA; two daughters, Cumby Hammock-Cobb and husband David Cobb of Bishop, GA, Gina Hammock and husband David Vanidour of Augusta, GA; sister, Emily Harvill of Oglethorpe, GA; three grandchildren, Natalie Bradley and husband Edward, Noah Cobb and Marianna Hammock-Vanidour; one great grandchild, Reese Bradley and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Everett (Goochie) Hammock.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Zion-St. Luke Lutheran Church Foundation Fund, P.O. Box 187, Oglethorpe, GA 31068.
