George E. Averill

CATAULA, GA - George E. Averill of Cataula, Georgia passed away on March 1, 2023 at the age of 82. He was born in Macon Georgia on February 18, 1941. George lived with his family at a young age in Montezuma, Georgia. He was a 1959 graduate of Montezuma High School. He attended the University of Georgia and graduated with a BS in 1967. George married the love of his life Ellen Corbett in July of 1971 in Montezuma, Georgia.

George served our country in the National Guard and US Army Reserves from 1965-1980. While serving in the US. Military he attended Columbus State University obtaining his Masters of Science Degree in 1984. In 1980 he started a career as a public school teacher teaching science, teaching at Columbus High School, then Rothschild Middle School and eventually Carver High School. He continued his education by obtaining a six-year post graduate degree from Columbus State University in 1986.

After George retired from teaching he developed a hobby of repairing chandeliers. He was very active in several clubs in the area to include the Ham Radio Club, the Chattahoochee Valley Daylily Society and the Chattahoochee Valley Science Teachers Association. George loved playing strings instruments especially the ukulele and banjo. He was musically talented. He also had a passion for Ham Radios and was a Morse Code operator and instructor.

George leaves his loving memory to be cherished by his loving wife of 51 years Ellen, son John and his wife Melanie and his beloved granddaughter Madison. He is also survived by his cousin Dave Walker and nephews George and Hal Brownett. George was preceded in death by his parents Aughtry and George Averill, Sr.; his sister Aughtry Ann and his beloved granddaughter Ashley Averill.

A Celebration of Life Service in honor of George was held on Sunday, March 5, 2023 at 4:00 PM in the Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary in Columbus, Georgia with a reception following in the Mill Room.

A Graveside Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, June 25, 2023 at 2:00 PM in the family plot at Felton Cemetery in Montezuma, Georgia.
