Frances Elizabeth Wood Maffett, age 92, of Montezuma, GA passed away Monday morning, February 2, 2009 at her residence, Carlyle Place, in Macon, GA.
A memorial service was held at the Montezuma United Methodist Church on Thursday, February 5,2009 at 1:30 PM with Rev. Nancy Lee Cater and Rev. Chip Grantham officiating. Interment was private and held in the Felton Cemetery in Montezuma.
Born on August 1, 1916, in Sandersville, Georgia to Edwin Pierce and Gladys Bradley Wood, she was predeceased by her husband, Harry Norris Maffett, two sisters, Beverly Wood Marshall and Shirley Wood Norwood, all of Montezuma, GA, a brother, Edwin Pierce Wood, and a grandchild, Elizabeth Maffett George. She attended Wesleyan Conservatory in Macon, GA where she studied piano under the late Doris Jelks.
Frances was a long time member of the Montezuma United Methodist Church, where she played the piano for the children's Sunday school class for over 60 years. She was the first chairman of the National Day of Prayer in Montezuma and served in that capacity for several years.
Generously sharing her talent, she played for Bible schools, teas, receptions, the Senior Citizens' Center and other churches. She was an active member of the Music Lovers Club of Montezuma and a "fixture" of the community where she worked with her husband in the family business for many years. She worked hard to clean up Montezuma after every flood and encouraged others to help also.
"Miss Fannie", as she was lovingly called by the children she played for and some of her friends, was a rare individual who could play the piano by ear. Her repertoire was amazing and she had no idea how many songs she could play. "I don't think I have ever forgotten a song," she would say, "they just stick in my head." One of her favorite memories was getting together with her sister, Beverly, who could also play by ear. They would invite people over and play for the group to sing. Since moving to Macon in 2002, she played the piano for monthly sing-a-longs at Carlyle Place as well as for community programs in and around Macon.
She is survived by her loving family, which includes her two daughters and sons-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George (Shirley) Shattuck of Greensboro, GA and Mr. and Mrs. Scott (Beth) Glass of Savannah, GA; grandchildren, Bill George and his wife, Bess, of Atlanta, Margaret Beasley and her husband Louis, Callie Kelly and her husband Win, all of Charlotte, NC and Scott Glass of New York, NY; and by great-grandchildren, William and Bradley George of Atlanta and Elizabeth and Caroline Beasley of Charlotte, NC. Her wonderful caregivers, Jacintha Curry and Janice Gail, also survive her.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Montezuma United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 159, Montezuma, GA 31063. A gift of blood in her name at a Red Cross Blood Drive would be life saving to others as it was to her for a long time and would be appreciated by the family.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Watson-Mathews Funeral Home of Montezuma.
