Ernest Leigh Powell, Jr

Ernest Leigh Powell, Jr., age 78, of Oglethorpe, passed away on October 6, 2024.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens in Oglethorpe, Georgia, with Bishop Willie Cooper officiating.

Leigh was born on August 16, 1946, in Moultrie, Georgia, to Ernest Leigh Powell, Sr., and Ruby Dunn Powell. He grew up in Moultrie along with his six siblings. After graduating from Moultrie High School, Leigh was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He served two tours, voluntarily returning for the second, and earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. For his bravery and meritorious service, he was awarded the Bronze Star.

Leigh and his wife, Fanchone, moved several times before settling in Oglethorpe, where they raised their family. He worked as a Maintenance Mechanic at Weyerhauser until he retired.

An avid outdoorsman, Leigh enjoyed hunting, fishing, and following his favorite sports teams. More than anything, he cherished spending time with his family.

Leigh is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Fanchone; daughter LeighAn Goodwin (Marty) of Sylvester; sons Merlan Powell (Ansley) of Savannah; Adan Powell of Oglethorpe; and five grandchildren: Hunter Goodwin, Payton Goodwin, Ella Powell, Knox Powell, and Henry Powell.

Leigh also leaves behind his brothers, Hugh Pierce, Terry Powell (Jacki), and Kent Powell (Jane), his sister, Wanda Bastian, and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Betty Jo McLeod, and his brother Jerry Powell.
