Elton Ray Arnold

MARIETTA, GA - Elton Ray Arnold, 97, of Marietta passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2013.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 25, at First Baptist Church in Montezuma, Georgia with Rev. Dr. LaMon Brown officiating.Visitation will be at the church from 12 Noon at 1:00 p.m.Burial will follow at Bertha Dozier Cemetery in Montezuma.

Mr. Arnold was born January 10, 1916 in Macon, Georgia, where he graduated from Lanier High School.In 1941 Ray and his wife, Evelyn, moved to Montezuma, Georgia where they lived until September 2000, when they moved to Marietta to live with their daughter.

Ray served the citizens of Montezuma for many years beginning in 1941 when he purchased Maxey's Dairy which he ran until 1954.He had a productive life serving the City of Montezuma, first in 1947 as a councilman; then as Assistant City Clerk the next year.

The City of Montezuma, under Ray's leadership, accomplished many things. Some of these being construction of the Carl P. Savage Airport, natural gas pipe lines, new waste water treatment plan, Champ Waters Cemetery, Bertha Dozier Cemetery, city streets widened and paved, new City Hall built and furnished, new fire station and numerous other achievements for the betterment of life for the citizens of Montezuma.

Ray retired in 1981.Even in retirement, he was always available to help in any way he could.In the mid 1980's the City Hall was named the E. Ray Arnold Municipal Complex in his honor as an expression of appreciation for all the contributions Ray had made to the city.Evelyn was always by his side assisting in whatever he accomplished.(Copied from The First Baptist Church of Montezuma September, 2000 issue of their newsletter.)

Ray loved his family dearly and will be sincerely missed by his daughter, Betty Arnold McCoy; two grandsons, Chuck McCoy & wife, Carrie, of Houston, TX and Mike McCoy & wife, Claudia, of Woodstock; great grandchildren, Chase & Cameron McCoy of Houston, TX and Haley, Kyla & Cade McCoy and their mom, Mandy Allison; Michael & Jonathan McDowell of Woodstock; brother-in-law, Lane Moseley of Macon; beloved niece, Joan Arnold DeVaughn of Augusta and other very special nieces & nephews.

Donations may be made in memory of Elton Ray Arnold to the First Baptist Church, 207 North Dooly Street, Montezuma, GA31063 or to a charity of your choice.
