Carl Eugene Johnson,age 95, died peacefully Sunday, September 13, 2009 at White Oak Manor in Burlington, NC where he had been cared for during the last year.He was formerly a resident of Friends Homes West, Greensboro, NC, where he lived from 1996 to 2008.
Before moving to Greensboro, NC in 1985, Mr. Johnson had spent all of his life in Middle Georgia.He was born to William Edwin and Robert Elizabeth Johnson in Dooly County, Georgia on October 22, 1913.
He is survived by his daughter, Vivien Johnson Carson and his son-in-law, Charles Ferdinand Carson, Jr. of Greensboro, NC; two grandchildren, Charles Randall Carson and his wife, Lisa Anne Carson, of Apex, NC and Catherine Carson Foster and her husband, Allen Foster, of Huntersville, NC. He was also the proud great-grandfather of six great-grandchildren.His loving wife of 54 years, Louise Kirksey Johnson, preceded him in death in 1993.He was also preceded in death by another daughter, Carole Louise Johnson, who died in infancy. His siblings, all of whom also preceded him in death, were William Bryant Johnson, Lt. Cmdr. Roy Edwin Johnson, Alvin Johnson, Lucy Mae Johnson and Warren Johnson.
In his earlier years, Mr. Johnson was a very devoted and active member of the Masonic York Rite Lodge, the Masonic Commandry Lodge and Eastern Star.At the time of his death he was a member of Muirs Chapel United Methodist Church, Greensboro, NC and had formerly been a member of Friendly Avenue Baptist Church, Greensboro, NC.As a Georgia resident, he had belonged to Fort Valley Baptist Church, Fort Valley, GA and Montezuma Baptist Church, Montezuma, GA.
For 33 years Mr. Johnson worked in several propane gas businesses, the last of which was AC Gas Company, Marshallville, Ga.In 1978 at age 65 he retired from that business, but soon after moving to North Carolina began working again part-time at Camco Manufacturing Co. in Greensboro; he worked there until he retired a second time at 80 years old.
The family appreciates very much the friendships, cares and concerns that friends and staffs at both Friends Homes West and White Oak Manor extended to Mr. Johnson during his residency in those facilities.
His faith in God, his family, his friends, his work these were the things that were important to Carl Eugene Johnson.We celebrate now his new life in Christ.
The family received friends at Watson-Mathews Funeral Home, Montezuma, Georgia from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Friday, September 18, 2009.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 19, 2009 in the chapel at Watson-Mathews Funeral Home in Montezuma, Georgia.
Burial followed the service at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Fort Valley, Georgia.
