OGLETHORPE, GA - Barbara Jean Avery, age 70 of Oglethorpe, GA passed away Sunday, December 26, 2010 at Montezuma Health & Rehabilitation Center.
Funeral services were held 2 pm, Wednesday, Dec. 29 in the chapel of Watson-Mathews Funeral Home with Rev. Greg Lowery officiating. Burial followed in Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Visitation was from 6 to 8 PM, Tuesday, Dec. 28 at the funeral home.
Barbara was born on August 19, 1940 to the late Huston Monroe Varnum and Leila Mae Harden Varnum. She was a member of New Life Baptist Church and was self - employed, escorting mobile homes with her husband. She loved to cook and spend time with her family. She was preceded in death by 4 brothers - Julian, Jack, Johnny and Billy Varnum.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Leonard Avery of Oglethorpe, GA; her children and their spouses, Mike and Peggy Avery of Oglethorpe, GA, Cathy and Thomas Cromer of Leesburg, GA, Melody Turner and Dennis Bodrey of Oglethorpe, GA, Tommy and Cynthia Avery of Oglethorpe, GA; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda and Larry Harrod of Plains, GA, Dorothy and Carson Devane of Americus, GA; 12 grandchildren, Brian Cromer of Leesburg, GA, Les Cromer of Leesburg, GA, Shauna Layfield of Ellaville, GA, Brandi Benford of Ellaville, GA, Steven Simmons of Bossier City, LA, Ciji Cox of Ellaville, GA, Vicki Teele of Ellaville, GA, Bobby Avery of Oglethorpe, GA, Joseph Raper of Oglethorpe, GA, Matthew Raper of Oglethorpe, GA, Karlee Avery of Oglethorpe, GA, Marc Raper of Andersonville, GA; 14 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson; three sisters-in-law, Gerri Varnum of Americus, GA, Diane Varnum of Ellaville, GA, Peggy Varnum of Americus, GA; many nieces and nephews.
Watson-Mathews Funeral Home of Montezuma was in charge of funeral arrangements.
